Product Description

Our Ethiopian ‘Yirgacheffe’ is one of the most unique and flavorful coffees available. Coffee Arabica originated in the mountains of Abyssinia, which is now called Ethiopia. Coffees from Ethiopia vary somewhat from region to region but coffees from the Yirgacheffe plateau are widely considered the best. These coffees are world-renown for their intense floral and lemon aroma and flavors of chocolate and red wine. We tasted a lot of different ‘Yirgs’ before we found just the right one. We think you’ll agree that this is one of the most powerful, complex coffees you’ve ever tasted.
Because Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, it is found growing wild in all regions of the country. Even today, much of the cultivated coffee in the country comes from wild tress that grow naturally in the forests. The coffee tree, being a native species, is more naturally pest and disease resistant. It also requires far less intensive cultivation techniques which makes these coffees natural candidates for Organic certification. Most coffee grown in Ethiopia is Organic by means of default (pesticides and herbicides are not generally needed) so the transition to certification is made easier in many ways.
This coffee is grown by the Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union which is a union of 35 cooperatives encompassing farms from all the regions of Ethiopia. The OCFCU’s mission statement is, “To make small producers economically self-sufficient and their households food secure through the strength of a privately owned and democratically controlled coffee producer's cooperative union.” Through the OCFCU many positive changes are being made throughout the world of Ethiopian specialty coffee. Industry standards for quality and sustainability are being raised and everyone is enjoying the benefits. The higher prices given for certified Organic and Fair Trade coffees go directly to the growers and make improvements in their communities.
Once you try our Ethiopia ‘Yirgacheffe’ you’ll agree that this is truly one of the world’s finest Organic, Fair Trade, shade grown coffees.
